The history of Hersonissos

Based on excavations and artefacts found in the surrounding area, Hersonissos history dates back to the Minoan era. After the destruction of Minoan civilization continued to exist.
In Hellenistic times Hersonissos was governed by a Dorian city called “Lyttos” but retained limited independence.

Later on in Roma times, Hersonissos became more powerful and developed further by building their own theater (which was heavily destroyed in the past) and bathing facilities.

In the 1900s the inhabitants of Hersonissos were forced to move inland due to pirate raids.
As a result the people moved inland and founded Ano (which means upper) Hersonissos while the seaside town fell into obscurity.

For many years things remained the same with little development until the 60s was discovered by tourism.

 1) Day Trip to a water park

Hersonissos 2

Aqua Plus: is located close to Hersonissos and is great for anyone who likes to have fun. They have lots of different slides for all the age groups, from very extreme for the thrill seekers to very relaxed for the ones who are not in the need of an adrenaline rush. There is also a restaurant and a bar as well as some shops. Photographers are taking photos of people trying the various slides which can be printed and purchased later. Get there early and enjoy a whole day of fun.

Hersonissos 3

Watercity: is another great water park located close to Hersonissos. It is fairly similar to Aqua Plus, featuring a good variety of water slides for every age group. Although be aware that for most slides, kids have to be taller than 140cm. The facilities are well organised and the staff is friendly. As in Aqua Plus the waterpark is cashless, meaning that you wear a bracelet, which is being charged every time you purchase something. At the end of your stay you pay the total amount. Plan in to stay a whole day and you will be surprised how fast time passes when you are having fun.

2) Crete Golf Club

3) Lychnostatis Open Air Museum

The Lychnostatis museum is by far one of the best museums in Crete. If you are interested in the vast history and cultural heritage of the island and its people you should definitely pay a visit. The museum has indoor and outdoor exhibitions with a lot of very interesting facts about the past, the owners, the works, the museum itself and of course Crete. It truly creates an appreciation for self reliance, harmony with nature, and family history. Visit early, get the audio guide at the entrance and be prepared to spend 2-3 hours in this fabulous place.
